It's official, folks! My new blog is running full steam ahead. Due to how easy it is to upload and post artwork there, I will be sharing my adventures on tumblr from now on instead of Blogger... at least for now. Don't worry though, this blog isn't going anywhere. Greenseth.com no longer directs my website visitors here, but I have a feeling this version of the PojBlog will be alive and well for a long time to come.

For all posts June 9th, 2011 and newer (aside from this one, of course) visit my tumblr account.

Shortly after my previous post, I was unwittingly lured into tumblr where I accidentally made a blog and posted things in it. It was an accident, I swear.

Everything is so simple to manage in the tumblr world that I think I may give it an extended test run. I am not going to officially "retire" this blog yet, but there is a very good chance it will cease my main source of news and updates. If this is confirmed to be the case, I will change the links on my website to point toward my new blog instead of this one.

Celebrities must do nothing but tweet

I am convinced that celebrities must be glued to their phones and laptops all day just tweeting away, because it seems like all of the celebrities I follow bestow a tweet upon the public once every 30 seconds or so. How does that work? Do they all have un-sleeping writers that do the tweeting for them? Are the wit-generating portions of their brain wired directly into a iPhone? However it works, I'm sure there's a very glamorous explanation. For now, I suppose I will have to live with the drudgery of performing my OWN tweet feats without the aid of writers or telepathic wifi. Good news for you, though! My own laboriously produced twitter litter is now right over here somewhere, emblazoned upon this blog for all passers-by to indulge upon. ----->

To change the subject - I totally reworked the Illustrations portion of my website and trimmed it down to what I consider to be only my 14 absolute best pieces. I created a flurry of new work last week and only a couple of the new pieces made the cut, but luckily you can still check out more or less my entire gallery of work on deviantART. Reflections on Europe

Some friends of mine are meeting up in Germany this summer, and their stories of preparation remind me constantly of how nervous I was before embarking on my own European adventure. Although I'm sure some more seasoned travelers might laugh, here was the list I compiled to "help" my friends prepare (although to be honest, I mostly just wrote this because I was feeling nostalgic). I may try and make the list an even 20 things and then post it on my website eventually, but that's probably a long way off. I put extra focus on what hostels/backpacking are like, since those were the things I knew least about before my adventures.

Things I wish people told me before I went backpacking in Europe:
1. Douglas Adams said it best - Bring a towel. If you don't bring a towel, buy one when you get there. Even if it's just a small hand towel, it'll be better than nothing. I spent half of my European trip using a damp tee shirt covered in exploded pen ink as a towel, and it was about as fun as it sounds. Get a towel, use it, keep it dry. It's an indispensable item and I'll always bring one with me in the future.

2. Don't wear a fanny pack. Even if it makes you feel more "secure," you'll look ridiculous.

3. Be aware of what your phone/carrier can and cannot do overseas before you leave. There may be fees involved if you try to use it, or it may just flat-out not work. I think AAA sells/loans travel phones at affordable rates, from what I can remember.

4. Contrary to some opinions, not all hostels are bad. Most of the hostels I stayed in were relatively clean and full of fellow adventurers. I did not once feel scared or nervous in a hostel, and they're actually the places that felt most like "home" while abroad. They see a lot of English speakers and therefore try to make things comfortable for them. I'm sure this varies widely from place to place, but I stayed in... 3? They were all decent enough.

5. That said, I found it was good practice to sleep with my valuables. I slept with my shoes, laptop, passport, and identification either on me or next to me on my bed. This was probably an unnecessarily strict precaution, but the thought of being stranded without identification, money, or shoes was a pretty good motivation to be cautious.

6. Most hostels have lockers you can rent out for the day. It was helpful to have a place to put my backpack during the day, but I would still never keep anything too valuable in there, and I wouldn't recommend using them overnight. In any case, I'd say they're worth a couple of euros per day to save your back.

7. ATM cards are awesome, perhaps TOO awesome. Instead of travelers cheques, I took my ATM card to Europe and was able to retrieve euros from pretty much all ATMs.

8. A 2 euro coin may not look like a lot of money, but it's more than 2 US dollars. They spend like coins, so they're easy to throw around without much thought to how much they're really worth. Don't go too crazy with them!

9. Laptops are really awesome things to have, but they A) take up a lot of room, B) are really heavy, and C) are a pretty big liability. If you have a netbook, or super slim laptop, definitely bring that. If you don't, I would say the pros and cons of bringing a laptop overseas (for backpackers, anyway) go pretty much 50/50. I do not regret bringing mine, but it would have been great to have something lighter instead. Most "hip" hostels seem to have free wifi.

10. TRAVEL LIGHT. I saw a couple of "backpackers" lugging around suitcases, and it looked dreadful. If you are going to be changing locations often (or even if you're not), try to fit everything into a moderately-sized backpacking pack. Many days when I left my hostel, I'd take absolutely everything I brought with me on my back. If you bring too much stuff, there probably won't be enough room to store it all and it's an added liability. Try to go for 0 checked bags, too, since that's a huge convenience and time saver.

11. Bring a healthy number of socks.

12. Keep your pens isolated from your other stuff (and maybe in a plastic bag) so that if they blow up they won't blow up on your clothes. Seriously, this happened to me.

13. More people will speak English than you might think. The mass transit systems in Europe tend to be awesome, and workers at major transit hubs will almost certainly speak some amount of English. If they don't, ask them if they can direct you to someone who does. Politeness goes a long way, too, so remember to at least learn the native words for "please" and "thank you" for wherever you might be traveling.

14. Clip your nails before you leave!

15. Regularly check yourself for your passport, money, ID, and any other valuables. Every time I boarded a train or changed venues, I checked. Try to keep your small valuable items in a zipped pouch or compartment of some kind, too, since items in pockets are prone to falling out.

16. Bring a hat!! If you have to go without a shower for 1+ days, you'll be glad you did.

17. Another thing about hostels; they are not like hotels. All but one of the hostels I stayed at did not provide towels, and none provided soap, shampoo, conditioner, or other toiletries. If you want to avoid checking your bags, pick these things up at a pharmacy upon your arrival.

Cardboard Things gets an overhaul

I finally decided to start overhauling [cardboardthings.com] again for the first time in about two years. It's not quite "all it can be" yet, but it doesn't look quite as slapped together as the original version, at least. The navigation is simpler and the graphical elements aren't nearly as 1998 and visually jarring as they used to be. Progress is awesome.

Although most of the changes I made to the site in the last couple of days were visual, I also completely re-wrote the What are they? and About the site sections virtually from scratch. I'm especially proud of the writing in "About the site."

My next logical step is the incredibly time consuming task of scanning the rest of my collection. Stay tuned!

Busy with "wuffa" stuff

As in, WfA (War for Arcadia) stuff.

This has been an interesting couple of weeks. I returned recently from a week-long trip to Arizona, which was quite relaxing and nice thanks to the above-average weather there. Back in rainy Portland, OR, I've been trying to organize myself.

I've jumped back into the job search with the determination of a hungry cheetah. "That's great!" I hear you say. It is! Right now though, I feel a little like a cheetah chasing a motorcycle down a freeway. I can almost see that perfect, glittering job just up ahead, but it's staying just out of reach and it will still be a challenge to sink my fangs into when I get close enough. I'm hoping that can-do attitude and hard work are all a cheetah needs.

I've also recently been busy helping with the "overhaul" of one of my favorite places, War for Arcadia. Upgrading the forum from phpBB2 to phpBB3 was a big job and not without its moments of exhaustion and terror, but it's now nearly finished and it's miles ahead of the old one. Many other excellent artists pooled their web design/html/css/php knowledge together in order to make this thing a success, and everyone deserves a big round of applause for their efforts. Our number of active participants has already increased, and I see that as a sign of victory.

My tablet is dead and I'm waiting for a new one to arrive in the mail. In the meantime, here's some pixel art:

Geocaching

In lieu of a week-long trip to Tucson-area, Arizona that I have yet to write anything about, I've picked up geocaching as a hobby and taken it home with me. To the uninformed, geocaching is an outdoor sport that is essentially GPS-aided treasure hunting. It's really swell, and it may even warrant its own blog in the future, if I can stick with it. In any case, this is mostly just a PSA to let everyone know that I am alive and well, and that if you need me, I will probably be geocaching. Or drawing. One or the other.

My latest site update goes out to my mother, who really wanted the picture that was in the "comics" part of my website banner to be somewhere easily accessible on my site. The more I thought about it, the more this request made sense, and it inspired me to add an entirely new section to my pre-existing comics page. You can now browse individual comic pages from some of my adventures over at War for Arcadia, along with some others from various comic venues.

I forgot to mention that I added a fun little extracurricular project to the site as kind of an easter egg. I'm going to spoil the secretive aspect of it right now though, simply because it took way too long to make for me to keep under wraps. Hint: It involves Minecraft. You can check it out here.

3D-licious

Sometimes I log into Blogger and try to make a long, thoughtful post about something deep and interesting. Too often, what starts as a brooding introspective soon sharply derails into a disorganized ramble that stops halfway into paragraph 20 and never actually reaches any kind of conclusion.

One of these most recent flops of a marathon post was about how important I think it is for artists who work in primarily 2 dimensions to branch out and work in 3 dimensions, as I have recently tried to do. There is really something magical about seeing your own characters, vehicles, and other creations bending and rotating before you in a way that cannot be replicated on paper or in Photoshop. If you are an artist reading this who has never experimented with any kind of 25.D/3D program or even with something like clay or wax, I encourage you to try. I find that even after an hour or two of messing around with an extra dimension, my two dimensional work starts to show marked improvement.

Speaking of marked improvement, look at what's happened in only about three years!

Unbeknown to me, my last site update left the images in the "projects" portion of the website (shoes, trip to Europe, etc) in a state of total disarray. Since that part of the site was not the target of my update, I did not notice it until now. Everything is once again fixed!

"Centipitus" and other cool/creepy stuff

The site is finally updated, and I can happily announce that the illustrations page now boasts a completely re-vamped set of images, including many new ones and just as many improved older ones. Among the pieces are new bits of concept art for characters, vehicles, and creatures like the creepy one pictured above. I am working at adding more Zbrush-created 3D models to my collection right now too, so stay tuned for those.

Also, as promised, the new shoes have been added to the site as well (finally).

For those of you who follow my adventures on War for Arcadia, I will be joining up this round for the first time in several months. More updates to come!

The new shoes were going to premiere on the website a couple of days ago, but I started piecing things together and realized I had a bunch of other work I needed to add, too. There won't be a shoe debut until the weekend now, but the good news is that a whole lot of other good things will be posted simultaneously.

Shoe experiments

In an effort to expand my shoe-painting options, I am testing out an inexpensive brand of slip-on canvas shoe that I found at the local drug store, of all places. If the shoes are able to stand the wear and tear of my adventurous urban feet, they may prove a viable option for some of my further painting endeavors. I will undoubtedly keep using Vans for most of my designs, partially because they look cool but also because of how durable and timeless they've proven to be.

The prototype art that I have painted the new shoes with is based on this design, and you can see the completed shoes here, at least for now. I'm calling the design "Moon Truce," and it's a lighthearted theme based on characters from Blizzard Entertainment's Warcraft universe. The shoes will probably walk their way over to the main website sometime tonight.

A series of cool things

For starters, Gothology II - Misery Loves Company was reviewed by Midnight Fiction, and yours truly received a special mention in the article for "Tabatha," the short comic I wrote for that book. Hooray! I encourage you to check out the full review on behalf of all artists featured within the dark pages of Misery Loves Company.

The site also received a small update involving Gothology, but that update is just the tip of the iceberg. There will be at least one more addition of content to the site by the end of next week.

Ferdinand the lull

Hello, my friends! I fear it has been quite a while since my last blog, but never fear! I come bearing gifts!

I've got a good amount of new stuff on the website to check out, and I've been periodically posting doodles and other work on deviantART. I've also got a small (yet effective) Cat Odes preview available on the site now, too. Of course, if you're looking for OFFICIAL Cat Odes documentation, you should definitely check out this fine website put together by DAPshow itself.

"Designosaurs" remain kind of a campaign promise for now. I am in the market for a new camera, and so my photography-based items are perpetually delayed as I continue my search. I have a new acrylic-on-canvas painting I will be posting too, once I've figured out how to solve my camera woes.

Writing some stuff

I couldn't think of an appropriate title for this update, so I just wrote exactly what is going on. I've been writing a story. It is coming along pretty well so far, I think.

I've got a website update in the works, and it will feature a few new illustrations and a re-designed comics page. I am going to try to squeeze in the afore-mentioned "Designosaurs" too, but it's going to require at least one nice day so I can take some photos. The weather has been awful lately.

I am pleased to announce that I have finally finished my next 5 pairs of painted Vans, and that you can already check them out on my website! It's a good thing I snapped some photos yesterday, because the weather took a turn for the worse today and it is currently hailing. In any case, you can click here to see the shoes.

Since I am never content unless I have multiple projects lined up, to take the place of a completed one, I am pleased to announce that my next big venture is something called "Designosaurs." I will not give you any hints, besides saying it's pretty much exactly what it sounds like.

Busy busy! I know it's been a while since I've updated, so I'm just posting this to let everybody know that I have not dropped off the planet. I've been working very hard on multiple projects, and a few of them are just about finished. There will be new shoes to check out on greenseth.com in a matter of days!

I installed a new hard drive and restored it from my last back-up. It's like nothing ever hapened!

I shall be venturing over to my local laptop hard drive retailer this afternoon to pick up a new one. I presumably have an image of my current disk backed up and ready for re-write, and I am crossing my fingers that the whole ordeal will complete without a hitch. Busytown Partyface

Long time no talk, folks! The last couple weeks have had me pulling long, ridiculous hours as I've attempted to start, continue, and finish a plethora of different projects. I was going to make a cross-posting from my deviantART journal for ease of use, but my internet has been on the fritz since last night so I am just going to do a quick recap instead.

#1 - My shoe-painting days are not over yet! In addition to the five pairs I just finished up recently, there will be 5 more pairs available for viewing around the beginning of May... possibly sooner, if the weather decides to turn nice enough to let me take some preliminary pictures.

#2 - Those of you who follow me on deviantART may be pleased to know that I made it to round 2 of PCBC2, a Pokemon-themed comic-drawing tournament. Hooray! You can see my Round 1 entry here.

#3 - I have a little bit of new artwork I will be posting on the website soon, so stay tuned for that.

#4 - Dorm Adventures had to take a break last Thursday, but it should be back this coming Thursday.

The title of today's entry is the first thing that popped into my head as I started writing, and really has nothing to do with anything else beyond this sentence.

Good news! I added two new pairs of shoes to the website, and completely revamped the "shoe" part of the site's navigation. The shoes are showcased much better now, especially the submarines, which weren't quite getting the credit they deserved in the site's old format.

I have a certain fondness for the front page's new splash image, too.

What a rare Tweet - PLUS! BurgerVenture

Up until today, I had a Twitter widget on greenseth.com's homepage. It was once my rudimentary "news feed" for the site, up until I implemented this blog. Once the blog became my "news" outlet, the functionality of the Twitter widget as a means of announcing important things fell apart and it instead became a cavalcade of unbearable nonsense that really has very little business existing at all, let alone on the front page of a portfolio site. But never fear! You can still track my wacky (yet sparsely-updated) Twitter antics here on the blog, in the sidebar. Hopefully now, the greenseth.com homepage will be a quieter, more enjoyable place.

Edit: I cannot seem to get the twitter widget to perform properly, so the blog will be without it for a while. Somehow, I doubt anybody is crying too loudly.

BurgerVenture! Episode #1 - The Missing Sauce

BurgerVenture! The new mini-series in which you can follow my really, really, super exciting fast food adventures and mishaps.

As some of you may know, Arby's restaurants (near here, anyway) have a recently-introduced $1 menu, upon which you can find such things as assorted sandwiches, curly fries, and even small milkshakes. I tend to usually choose burgers of any kind over "regular" sandwiches, but I have recently been lured to Arby's in promise of ridiculously cheap milkshakes and up to three different types of cooked animal slathered in Arby's sauce, often with an additional tall glass of Arby's sauce to wash it all down with.

Today I went the drive-thru route and opted for two ham and cheddar melts with a chocolate milkshake. I should note that even though the milkshake is only $1, it's about the size of my fist. My fist is about the size of a doorknob, ergo the milkshake is not very large. I can only stomach so much fast food milkshake, however, so this size tends to work out nicely for me. Anyway, when I got home I realized that I had forgotten to ask for Arby's sauce, which was kind of the whole point of going there to begin with. The sandwiches were still pretty good, but I kept thinking to myself... "You know what would make this even better? Arby's sauce."

The moral of the story: Always ask for Arby's sauce.

Fresia and Ted - THE MOVIE

Anybody who knows me even a little knows that I have two characters I focus on a lot - the resilient, absent-minded fighter named Fresia Albacore and her lovably naive scientist friend, Ted Helix. So far, they have made lots of appearances over at War for Arcadia (which makes sense, since they are the only two characters I have focused on over there) and have featured in several other projects of mine, including making cameos on a pair of shoes and being the subject of many an illustration.

Anyway, since I love writing and drawing comics so much, I got it into my head the other day that I would try to slowly work toward publishing the duo in their own adventure of some kind. Those of you familiar with my previous endeavors know that the last comic I pledged to publish, J. Jawson and the Predators, is uh... on a sort of permanent hold right now. For that reason, I am not going to make any big announcements or create any flashy websites until it looks like this Fresia and Ted project solidifies into something that will actually happen. I just thought writing it down somewhere might help to motivate me, which is why this post exists.

The shoes to end all shoes

I added a new pair of shoes to the website this evening, and I am mentioning them now (again) because they are probably the coolest things I have ever painted. I talked about them once in an earlier post, but I encourage you to go view the official photos because they are mind numbingly cool. Brain freeze cool, even.

In addition to writing small self-indulgent paragraphs, tonight has been comprised of watching episodes of Archer On Demand, eating instant ramen soup with an egg in it, and drinking chocolate milk on the couch. I would say probably 5 of the past 7 nights have ended that way, actually.

Speaking of brain freeze, I would like to remind everyone that Arby's has a $1 menu now, and that it has milkshakes on it. Buy one, buy three, buy five. It's worth it. The menu has other things on it, too, but they are usually so utterly slathered in Arby's sauce by the time I start eating them that I'm apt to forget what they are. Roast beef sandwiches, most likely. Part of the point I am trying to make is that I believe Arby's sauce brings incredible joy into this world.

Round 21 draws to a close

In War for Arcadia news, I am finally done with my Round 21 - cycle 4 entry. If you haven't seen it yet, I encourage everybody to go check it out. It involves a helicopter chase sequence, explosions, and plenty of juicy internal conflict! My opponent, WfA's Lewis Rice, produced two mind-blowing entries. This was definitely one for the books, folks.

In other news, the website got an update. My WfA battles now have a home on the site, and there are several new illustrations as well.

Plenty more exciting shenanigans will commence this week after I've recovered from drawing 20+ comic pages.

So far, this week has been pleasantly less hectic than last week. Granted, there is still a lot to do, but tonight I have NOTHING at all to do and so I am going to spend the evening watching Psych and enjoying a light snack. Here's to nights off!

IT'S IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE OF HOW EXCITING IT IS!!

I finished painting this pair of Vans yesterday, and I can pretty safely say that these are my favorite thus far. As per usual, I took some preliminary photographs of them and that is what you are seeing here. Also as usual, said photos are not quite up to my standard yet, which is why the shoes aren't on the site. If the nice weather keeps up, I will probably take these puppies outdoors and have an "urban" photo shoot sometime before the weekend.

Stained Glass Window / Cathedral Vans

Another day, another pair of shoes added to greenseth.com. These shoes are really unlike anything I have ever done before, and there is a 98% chance that I will never make another pair like them ever again! The amount of precision required for these was unreal, and I ran into numerous frustrations as I tried to find just the right color combination to make the shoe really feel like a "stained glass window" shoe and not a "random, brightly colored, Easter-themed" shoe. After much toiling and head-scratching, I think I succeeded.

WfA - Round 21 and other goodies

DAPshow has announced the official release of Misery Loves Company, available for purchase online at indyplanet.com. Know of any retailers who might be interested in stocking Gothology? The book has a page on Comics Monkey, too. I am very excited about this! Help spread the word about some great independent comic artists and get your hands on a copy. Tell all of your ghoulfriends.

This is big news! My own original comic, "Tabatha," resides within the pages of Misery Loves Company. Additionally, the first book was an incredible read, and I have heard that this one is just as good (if not better) all-around. In other news...

The website is in the middle of receiving another pretty significant update right now. The badly neglected "About Me" page is finally getting an overhaul, and I am cleaning up the front page (again). It should be easier to see what I'm going for as soon as my rennovations are done.

Official new blog test post

Well hey, look at this! This isn't the greenseth.com blog page, is it?

I am not sure yet! Maybe it is! This page represents a little test I'm doing, with the hope that everyone will go nuts over this new format and I'll finally be able to implement a blog with some functionality. It doesn't match my old site quite as well, but I'm willing to make that sacrifice in exchange for all the goodies I get for switching. Additionally, it is much easier to update THIS blog than the old one on my site. That means that all of my fine readers will be treated to more frequent/relevant/timely updates!

I have news to post, but I am going to wait to post it until tomorrow. In the meantime, tell me what you think of my new layout by leaving me a comment. Unless there's an overwhelming motion to go back to the old one, this is the one I will be using from now on.
